This bird was on my thistle sock this afternoon. Beautiful, but I don't know what kind. Birders, please help...

I tried to post a comment on the blog but have forgotten my password so I need to start over some how.
The bird apears to be a male house finch. The males are light red on the head and breast in the winter. In spring they turn to a brighter red. They are a bit larger than their cousins the gold finch. We have them by the dozens at our feed here in the winter. Gold finch also get a more brilliant color in the Summer. Most of the gold finch an house finch have left for the summer.
